So, here I am supposed to describe me a little. Well, I’ll try as best to portray my attitude and my thoughts about the beginning of my life until now. Hopefully that can provide the insight you need to do…whatever it is.
The first memory is a very bright light..and several people looking down at me, all the while I have this intense need to take a bath or shower. I was screaming, and this guy with the white mask and white gown first wanted to inspect me. Like a UPS parcel, checking me for little cracks or mishaps while in “transit.” Then after sucking out my mouth, and nose, which badly needed some attention right then…it all began to blur.
I grew up in small towns in Ohio. The first years of my life I lived in a small village called Phillipsburg, and later moved to the city of Lebanon, Ohio. Both places were your typical Midwest towns, especially in mentality. In Phillipsburg we went through the blizzard, a couple tornadoes, and a flood. Doesn’t get much more exciting! Even in Lebanon the excitement continued. I spent a lot of time outdoors learning and appreciating the imagination and nature around me.
During my early teens I worked on a farm down the road from me. It was Peck’s Dahlia Farm. Mr Peck, was an amazing and kind man that taught me a lot while I was around the farm. How to fish for snapping turtles, he drove me in on the tractor, great fun stuff for a young guy.
After graduating High School, I decided to join the members of the United States Air Force. After Operation Desert Storm, this was a hard decision to make, knowing the way the world works, and the wars we put our troops in. It was a whirlwind tour taking me to San Antonio Texas, Spangdahlem Germany, and ending up in St Louis Missouri. The tour in the military was the most incredible time, and molded me into the type of person that I am today. It is ironic that while in the Air Force, in Germany, that I began to get a taste of the acting bug.
My first play outside of the elementary school shows was The Dining Room. In this play I played 8 characters, ranging from a 12 year old to a 67 year old man. The acting bug hit me. I worked in 2 more plays; they were getting better and even more professional as we went. It was in Luxembourg that I went on my first film audition, for a movie that was filming in Luxembourg City. The film was New World Disorder, by Carousel Films. The film had Rutger Hauer, and Andrew McCarthy in it. I play a coroner that cleans up the mess of Andrew McCarthy after a shooting spree. Check out www.imdb.com for more info on it. It wasn’t an Academy Award winner by any means. You can rent it at Blockbuster, but you’d be better off to give your money to the homeless guy around the corner.
After working on that film I worked on the last play that I did with my friends at ACT Eifel, A Mid Summer Night’s Dream. This is my favorite play that I have done, playing the role of Bottom the Weaver. It was a magnificent performance that showed off a memorable performance by the cast and such great work by the crew. It was in Germany that I had the honor of meeting and talking with some great people, some very influential people: President Clinton, Madelaine Albright, William Cohen. Most of whom I really respect what service they’ve done for this country.
The Air Force decided that it needed me back in the Midwest so I begrudgingly left Germany for St Louis, Missouri. A great little big city. Home of Budweiser, The St Louis Rams, and many great friends. I worked on several independent films there, as I also worked with plays with The St Charles Theatre Company. Those included Arsenic and Old Lace, and Suddenly Last Summer. I played a bartender in my first SAG commercial that’s playing the Midwest. It’s a “come to st louis” commercial that was done by the Visitor’s and Convention bureau. It’s also playing in the St Louis Arch.
I made the decision to come out to Los Angeles to pursue the DREAM of being in the ranks of the great actors. Or at least around them on a regular basis. Out here in Los Angeles you quickly become adjusted to the things that are unlike what the Midwest has. Like traffic congestion, and Porsche’s on every corner.
The best thing that I did was get a great group of friends around. They help me keep going forward, pursuing this obsession that I have to entertain people, to make people laugh, cry, and become moved. Fortunately I landed a couple acting gigs when I first moved here, improving my sense of capability in LaLa land (LA’s nickname.) So from here on there is nothing but the best to come.
Someone once said “The journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step.” LET THE JOURNEY BEGIN. I’ll see you in the movies.
